The Cost of Permanent Makeup

It seems that the first question everyone wants to know about permanent makeup is the cost.  The actual cost of the permanent makeup treatment itself is very reasonable, ranging from $200-$400 per area.  If you consider what you pay to have your hair done every 6 weeks or the cost of buying expensive makeup to get the look you want, not to mention the time you spend daily applying makeup and taking it off, permanent makeup can actually SAVE you money in the long run.  However, you must be cautious on who you choose to do your permanent makeup or the emotional cost can be HIGH!!

Permanent makeup is an art!  Not everyone can do it even if they had proper training.  Make sure to ask your technician to see their actual work and testimonials prior to having any treatments done.  Permanent makeup is just that, PERMANENT, to an extent.  Permanent makeup will fade with time and occasional touch ups should be expected every few years to keep your look fresh.

When pricing permanent makeup, make sure to ask if the initial price includes a "final touch or touch up" usually 4-6 weeks after your initial treatment.  Approximately 95% of clients will need this "touch up" to correct any faded areas, asymmetry issues or color concerns that they wish to correct after their first treatment.  It's important to remember the saying that "less is more" and "you can always add but you can't take away" when permanent makeup is involved.  Things can be fine tuned and added to give you the perfect look you want during your "touch up" appointment.  BEWARE if a touch up appointment isn't included in your initial quote for services.  The cheaper price may look better for your pocketbook but it won't look so nice on you if you can't afford to pay full price for a second appointment.

My final advice is to take the time to research your options (see my blog on selecting a permanent makeup technician) and take advantage of FREE consultations.  This will give you the confidence and knowledge to ask the right questions and choose the technician that will  make your permanent makeup a dream and not a costly nightmare.

How to choose a Permanent Makeup Technician

Permanent Makeup is, well, PERMANENT.  So finding the right technician is extremely important.  The following advice will assist you in finding "The One" permanent makeup technician that will make your dreams come true....no permanent nightmares please!

  • Technician qualifications: Make sure they are trained and certified by a reputable institution.  Ask to see their certificates and the number of hours they trained.  Unfortunately, ANY person can buy permanent makeup equipment off of the Internet and go into business.  There are currently NO state regulations to become a permanent makeup technician.
  • State and County licensing: Ask if they are a licensed facility and if they have a State tattoo permit.  Even though this doesn't prove their ability, it does show that they are serious about their business.  The state has strict requirements for all permanent makeup establishments.  So if they have a license, most likely, they are on the up and up.
  • Don't go to a Salon or Nail Spa: Unless they have a separate room for permanent makeup services.  The aerosols and other contaminates are not friendly to your treatment area.
  • The Technician is a Permanent Makeup "Trainer": This can be a good thing.  The technician has passed a written trainer certification and knows the ins and out of permanent makeup on paper.  The bad thing is they will charge you "Trainer" prices.  You don't want to learn how to do permanent makeup, so why pay expensive "Trainer fees"?
  • A Registered Nurse is a good idea: They have an advanced medical background in sterile technique, infection prevention, pain control, adverse effects of medications, disease states or medical history and anatomy.  This knowledge is important and can be a positive factor in the outcome of your treatment.
  • Are they a member of a professional permanent cosmetic society?:  A membership in the SPCP (Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals) or the AAM (The American Academy of Micropigmentation) shows that the technician is serious about their profession, is knowledgeable about the latest innovations and attends yearly conferences.
  • Check out the technicians work: Ask to see before and after pictures of their actual clients. They can have every certification in the world, but if they aren't artistic-Forget it! Ask the technician how long they have been doing permanent makeup.  Every technician needs to start somewhere, but you don't want to be their first, leave that for friends and family.
  • Check out the facilities:  Is it clean, attractive, professional and calming?
  • Schedule a consultation: Your technician should offer a FREE consultation.  During your visit, all of your questions should be answered, you should be able to view the facilities and the technicians portfolio, and not be pressured to have your permanent makeup treatment right away if you are not comfortable.
  • Trust your gut: We all have a gut instinct, and we should follow it!  If for ANY reason you're "not feeling it" or have reservations, by all means follow your instincts.  Don't get pressured into permanent makeup because of a limited time offer, special pricing or any other reason.
Permanent makeup can change your life!  So many clients wish they had done it sooner and love their results.  Finding the right technician is worth the time and effort, for a truly wonderful and beautiful experience!
